Hi everyone,

I have a small but verry anoing problem. Each time when i'm running the program and i double-click on a file, Revit open it in a new Revit , instead to open in the same Revit that is allready runnig. So like this i'm getting to have 8-10 different revit programs runnig instead to have one program with 10 tabs (windows) opened.

Im running Win7, please tell me if someone from you had this problem before and what is the solutoin ?

PS: Is about Revit 2012 !

Thank you !!!

Try to open the different revit project files inside the same revit session (CTR + O). You should be able to get all in the same revit session.

Double click opening of Revit projects is a BAD process.   Besides the problem you are experiencing, you run the risk of opening a project and possibly upgrading it while your not looking.  We instruct our users to never do this.

Just to agree with WWHub. This is a difficult thing to get users to stop doing. I would never double click when using Revit and definitely not if you have multiple versions installed.

I really can't understand why is BAD to open a file by double clicking it.

Is not the same as using the "Open" function from Revit ?

Beside all this advices (comes from you guys means a lot and i will try to respect them), my problem is still there, all my files, when i doubleclick, are opening in different Revit Instance, instead to open in the same Revit Instance different windows. Thank you for advices Smile

Please take our advice - don't double click for the reasons stated and window's/Revit default is that it opens a new session of Revit.

If you had read your help on this, it will not tell you the above but it will tell you this:

Drag multiple files from Windows Explorer into an active session of Revit. A dialog opens, asking whether you want to open dropped files in separate windows or load dropped families into the current project.

Perhaps that will give you an alternative you like?  Always use your HELP.

Thank you for your input klinkenborgen1961 on a post over a year old for your first forum entry.  If you have a better solution please post it, otherwise your response is not necessary or needed.

Hi everyone, long time reader first time poster.

I am experiencing this exact issue.  I could double click families etc, and it would open in a seperate tab, same revit session.

I am a very experienced user and completely understand the principles behind opening through revit etc, but this problem still should not be occuring.

I am curerntly using Revit 2016 on Windows 10.

My actions that lead up to this point are:

I had both revit 2015 and 2016 on my PC.  I completely removed 2015 to just work with 2016 from now on.  Going through my installed programs, I was removing revit 2015 applications and content libraries, and noticed AUTODESK APPLICATION MANAGER was installed only through 2015.  So i removed it.  After doing all of this and bringing my PC to only 2016, all .rfa files have now lost their REVIT thumbnails.  When i go to open the file, it asks me to choose which program.  I had to navigate through C: to find revit, the application was not on the sugested list.  Upon selecting revit, all my thumbnails have now returned to revit symbols, and the double click opens the file, but now instead of being opened in the same session, it cereates an entirely new revit session.

Now, I know the troubles of just opening files, what with central models, upgrading etc.  But when i sort through thousands of families, some incredibly similar aside from parametrics etc, I like to be able to just click, open and have a look, then import if necessary.  Having it open in a seperate revit session removes any ability to import the family into my project, and just proves to be a nuisance.

I have fiddled around with window settings, priorities etc and cant find any solution.  This al started from uninstalling revit 2015 and AUTODESK CONTENT MANAGER.

Please Obi Wan Kenobi, you are now my only hope.

It sounds like you have made some poor choices and now bear the consequences.  It would have been better to seek some advice ahead of time because you may have removed a necessary program.

You did not have to remove 2015 to get 2016 to work and some of Autodesk's programs are not updated every issue so when installing the new version, it may only look to see if you already have the program.

Great advice.  AUTODESK ACCOUNT MANAGER is a useless application.  deleting it made my computer load faster and run smoother.

So I figured it out myself in the end.  It turns out to be a rather annoying function related to windows and autodesk any time there is multiple versions of a program installed, be it AutoCad, Revit etc.  All the programs share the one file registry within windows, and when any of these instances is removed, it also removes the settings associated with how any related file will open.  So literally any time an earlier version of a program is removed, it also removes the default file registry settings.

Windows 7 could be managed easily by entering the system settings and adjusting the defaults to open in current session.  Windows 10 sadly is more difficult, and involves editing things I wont bother sharing here, seeing as you guys seem too afraid to touch anything outside of the default ribbons.

Or, if you want the long way around, another solution is to reinstall / repair the installation, and this brings back the default settings for associating files with revit.

DH design could u pls explain how did u manage to open the new file in open revit rather than new session.  My OS is windows 10. Thnaks

Another thing i think worth to mention is its all started to launch in different sessions only after i uninstall 2014 from my machine. Before that everything open in same session whether iam opening  thru Big R / open from folder . Just wondering is there any settings i need to look at?
