I created a sweep family for exterior cornice moulding using the "Generic Model wall based.rft" template. Attached is a snip of the sweep I created. When I load it into the model, however, I can't seem to control the length of the sweep and it extends well beyond the length of my model. This is maybe the second sweep I've created and am likely missing something obvious.

I don't know how YOU got the sweep to extend that far but it was something YOU did. Obviously it is controlled in your family and we have no knowledge of that.
Cornice molding is typically done easier and faster using the wall sweep under the wall tab. Revit typically comes in with a defined cornice profile. That tool will automaticall miter joints at corners whereas your family will not.
Read about wall sweeps in your HELP.
