No you cannot save back to previous versions. Will your University upgrade to 8.1?

You can download the latest version and it will install, you can then view the files but you will not be able to save or print.

It would help if everyone simply read the licensing options:
"Demo/Viewer
Demo mode allows all features of Autodesk Revit, but you cannot save, plot or export your project after changes are made. Demo mode serves as a no-cost viewer for yourself or team members who need to view, plot, and export projects without changing them."
The language states in plain english for anyone who cares to read it that you can view, plot and export projects as long as you did not change anything in the project.

Obvious that you have no idea what you are saying. Almost every copy of Revit is on subscription, which means upgrades to new versions are included as part of your subscription.

you can download the program at
http://revit.autodesk.com/Building/8.1/common/download.asp?en-us
if you are interested in purchasing the program, there is an student version that does not cost as much as the full version.
