Hello,
I have been having an awful time with the countertops that come with the program. Can anybody out there point me somewhere that will help me to understand and manipulate them?
Thank you for any info!

I don't bother with them.... I tend to just place them in as floors....

We typically have a lot of custom shaped countertops. Rather than having 50 million different countertop families to cover the various shapes we simply draw in a thin 32 or 16mm MDF floor and create an opening for a sink.
HTH.

I like Mr. Spot's approach by creating a thin floor, but what do you do about backsplashes? Supports? Do you make a standard support bracket and locate them as needed?

Sounds like a "spot on" fix
I'll have to try that.
first of all, it's easy to modify length and width in the family editor dialogue box
or
you can stretch them by clicking on and holding down to drag handles to length and width require.
pesky sink cutouts don't always travel with countertops...control z and start again
sink cutout locations are also a numeric value in the dialogue box...set from backsplash
If you're dead set trying to manipulate the countertop in the Family Editor, I'm a total noob at Revit and I managed to figure it out without reading the tutorials. You can do it too.
Place a countertop in your model
Select it the object
Edit family button appears, click
Countertop appears in 3D in a new window (you can file/close out if you want, or window/swap too)
Use browser to select Floor Plan / Ground Floor
You now have to select and modify both the "extrusions" and the "symbolic lines"
place the cursor over a line and hit your tab button...it will toggle between line types for you to select
Select the backsplash for example
then hit the Edit button
the view changes and the selected lines appear magenta
fall back on your ACAD or etchesketch basics to create what you want
hit Finish Sketch
remember to do the symbolic lines as well...these show up in your plan views
the extrusions show up in 3D
File SAVE AS
Rename so that you don't overwrite what we know to be a perfectly good countertop with your experiement
Hit Load into Project
Select current project
select Overwrite button IF you intent do upgrade your experiment...which you will as it will take a number of tries to get it right.
You can do this to those pesky corner cabinets with angles as well
cabinets have lots more going on tho...doors, bases, etc
I did this yesterday for the first time, but it worked, then i did the corner cabs
....so anyone feel free to point out this noobs errors
Spot's idea sounds like a time saver
I'll try that on Monday.
Cheers
