I am trying to paint the steel channel on the left, and the model-in-place components. Does anyone know why I can't paint them? I was able to paint the steel channel on the left. Thank you!!!

If you did model-in-place, then simply edit and assign the material.

Thanks WWHub! You're awesome...the simple stuff gets me most of the time...
I changed the column material, now I'm playing with the image material I loaded...which is more fun! Thanks again.

Whenever possible, you should be assigning material by object rather than paint. Paint is hard to find in the project and it doesn't show the proper material in cut views. Try to reserve the paint tool for split face areas.
