This is an unique questions on replacing materials.

i have many walls by many people in the same project which results in different material names on the same element in wall assembly. for example, the gypsum board has materails called "Gypsum board 16mm", "Pannel Gypse 16" "16mm GBP" etc.

Now I want to merge all these materials into one named "09 29 00.01 Gypsum Board 16mm".

any idea if this is realistic?

Did they use material tags or dumb text.  If they are material tags and everyone made their own material - shame on them.  If material tags, edit their familes and change the materials....

Ouch - you will see that all the material tags now show a question mark!  They lose their association.  AutoDESK needs to fix this.  Have they in 2014?  I don't know.  SO now you have to fix all those.

So your alternative is to change all their materials to say the same thing.

If this is just dumb text then this is easy.  Use the find and replace for the whole project.  Done!

We had the same issue managing our Revit projects in the past. Similar materials we assigned to different walls instead of one single material. This inconsistency made our files messy. After searching online for solutions, we did not find an acceptable solution for our needs. We then decided to create our own plugin to address this issue. Here's the Autodesk App store link:
