every time I try to increase the width of my awning windows, the symbolic lines that have been drawn to indicate the opening sash skew out of shape. is there a way of ensuring that these lines stay in the middle of the sash??

yes, you will need to lock the lines in your family, click on your lines and a dimension should appear, just lock it...

Yes. Lock the end points to the appropriate reference planes. Then add an equal dimension to make it stay in the centre.
