Anybody know how to overcome the problem that the new eliptical tool doesn't work in massing or solid modelling.

Well if the elipitical tool doesn't work in massing, I know it works when creating in-place families so you could always use this to do all the elipitical objects. If they need to attach to anything, ie: a roof. Be sure to use an appropriate family that allows attaching to the correct element.
