Morning,

This may be a simple No answer, but ive seen a couple of users ask the same question with no real response. Does anyone know of a way to change the back up file save path. I.e. Saving locally or into a folder of choice? Rather than clogging servers full of "file name" 001 - 008 etc.

I Know there is a way of reducing the number of these but thats just a quick fix,

Kind Regards,

Alex

There is no way that I know of to have you backup files save in a different location than your central file.

Not sure if this will answer your question. You can definately specify where your local files and backup files get saved.

The central file and peripheral file / folders need to be on the server somewhere.

Your local files and subsequent backup files are located according to what is specified in your 'Options' settings. See image.

I don't agree but perhaps I am wrong.  You can change where you want you local files to be saved as you pointed out but your central file backups will still backup wherever the central file is located.

I think we are all agreed on this however I think the original question was with regards to all the .001, .002 backup files that get created when you are NOT using a central file.

Both central files and local central files do not create .001, .002 files. They create backup folders in the same folder as the file itself and that folder is full of .nws and .dat files. That much is not changeable as far as we have agreed.

If you are saving non central files either locally or on the server it creates the .oo1, .002 files in the same folder and you cannot change that to my knowledge. You can set the maximum number of backup files in the 'options' dialog box on the Saveas dialog box but not the location. The default is '20' files which is far too much. Start by changing that to 2 or 3. That should help.

The extended answer is to have the IT people run a regularr script on the server to delete (isolate) all the redundant .001, .002 files on the server.
