Hello,
I have family with an length instance parameter (ex. wall protection). When I change an existing family to match this type, it changes the length to the default length. However I would like to keep the current length value. Is there a way i can maintain the original length value? Same issue as well when I reload the family into the project.
Thanks,

Hello,
I didn't overwrite the parameter values. The same issue occurs as well as i switch the family type within the project.
I like to keep the current length value.

Cman,
Please tell us the parameter type. Is it instance or type driven. You do not say.

I have mentioned it above. It's an instance parameter.

Now I see - sorry.
There is no way to do what you want. An instance parameter in one family is not really common to another famiy. Only within the same family type to type.
Typically parametric dimensions are to reference planes in the family .... and those same planes just don't exit in another family. The name "length" is just a name referring to a specific dimension in that family only.
Now if it was the same shared parameter, then it might transfer but I'm not sure.

The OP says the parameter is instance, but by the description of the issue is seems that the parameter is by type. Are you sure is instance? Is there a suffix in the name of the parameter such as (default) in the Family Types window? Some templates come with a built-in Length parameter that is by type. Hard to say more without seeing more information.
