This has probably been asked many times, but I have researched all day and I am not finding a direct answer about Wall Families. To begin I am a total newbie to Revit. I would like to use and or import wall types using the .rfa extensions from a solitary directory. I do not have ANY existing projects with these wall types. They are strictly from an imported wall type directory. I can open the .rfa wall types using “open/family” only. I cannot import them through “wall family”. Also, can you create sub directories in the wall family? As I would expect this from Autodesk so that I can create wall types in a more organized fashion than just the (3) categories provided. Also where are wall types stored? I don't see them in the US Imperial libraries? Thanks and I will enjoy using your forums to learn more.

Wall types are system families. They need to be created in the project for what you need, there aren't any for you to import from the Revit Library. If you have walls from another project that you want to bring into your new project you can use the Transfer Project Standards under the Manage tab. You will have to have your new project and the project you are transfering from open. As far as organizing the wall types I don't know of a way to do that and I don't think is possible.

There is no such family.
Wall types, ceiling, floor, roof, stair, ramp are all system families. You can't save them as a rfa. BUT - you can copy them from project to project.
You can create many - many different wall types using those 3 intitial families. I suggest you create a wall types project to keep them in so you can transfer them to any project.
BTW - You can place legends of these wall types on sheets in your wall types project - ..... thus organizing them!!!!

Very disappointed in AutoDesk…this is a real issue. It is Chief Architect like in the restrictive use of walls. But thanks for all the info!!

There is nothing wrong with this process. It works very well. Leave your other process at the door and learn Revit. Otherwise, you will be in for a long haul.

I don't understand what the issue would be? You can create your own wall types and they will be stored alphabetically so just think ahead when naming the wall types. The wall types project is a great suggestion from WWHub.
