most projects I work on are in 2012. i recently got 2013 and now when i double-click my projects they automatically open in 2013 and update. can i set something on my computer to where the default revit is 2012 and not 2013. (i know i can solve this by opening 2012 then selecting whichever project to open)

Opening from the file has always been discouraged in Revit. I know it is just as easy to open Revit first ... just takes practice.

With all due respect, I don't think the OP was looking for a sermon..
Here is the blog post that solved this problem for me:

Yes, apologies for the tone. I was trying to solve this problem the other day, and had to wade through quite a bit of similar advice to get to a response that was on point. Was getting a bit frustrated.
Agree with the advice on a general level, but most of my projects are on 2015, as the engineers are still on 2015. I have employees who reflexively open projects by double clicking, and sometimes even I do it by accident. I don't want to take a chance of upgrading projects to a format that is unuseable for the project.
Really like this site and benefit alot from you all!
