So you want to sweep a circle along in an S shape?
I don't understand the rotating part? Rotating a circle doesn't change anything?
Simply set a workplane for the sweep, draw your path in elevation then draw the profile of the circle at the appropriate radius.

after sweeping the circle along the s in front view I rotated/copied the sweep 3 times in plan view to create 3 pieces of rope that I thought I could join into a column which mght work if I could figure the right relationship of the radius of the circle to the radius of the s. 1/3 seems obvius but aint it. After lokking at your example it seems I shold be able to revolve groove out of a round column and get the right look maybe an array in a circle of slanted void revolves slicing a round column.
I need a break

so I build a rope column in autocad by splining a 3dpoly then using short segments to create the path but when I try to import it I am asked for a 3dmesh??? How little do I know?
Any hints?

renderable 2d this is a void revlve that only works if the front is perpendicular to the camera if you could put tis together with my 2d sketch with rotated copies and complex visability controles you could have a rope column fake-out maybe someone could do a better one as a balister.

I have an operational rope column that you guys could swipe and modify as you see fit. let me know if you want it. Hey Irving, where at in Naples?! I am in paradise too...
If you guys want the column, just yell and i will upload it. We tackled this issue by using symbolic lines to represent the rope. We did a twisted column (cant remember the fancy name for it) as well, this one we did by revolving a circle through 180, and the angling it upward. mirror and copy up and join it all...

Reviteer,
We would very much be interested in your rope column, and probably several other solutions that you have had to work out that are Southwest Florida specific. I will update my profile. Please get in touch.
Thank You,
Irving R Layne Jr

talk about doing things backwards. I am revlolving voids and Peter J pulls it off by revolving a solid. I still lose I sketched this one into my drawing and the boss said it was ugly. Yet it looks amazingly close to what Peter J maid and what I spent hours trying to make.
I am still going to have to have soething like this. They are very common around here. Guess I will steal a sketch off an old drawing before I start trying to model again
