How do you perform daylight studies with shade and shadow of massing elements?
Any suggestions appreciated!

I would orient your masses correctly with true north and render them with the correct sun settings... Find the time of year/day you want to test and render.

Also, to do the renderings i would create a 3d view and orientate it to top to get an orthographic view of the shadows.
