I've attached a file where I've extruded the profile of a roof, created the Void to cut the Area for a large Roof Light, and for some reason the void refuses to cut the geometry.
It's completely baffling me, I've tried turning the void extrusion into a sweep with the same mass, but still no luck, obviously the problem lies in the extrusion, but it's an as built model and the profile needs to be set ideally to the survey data.
Please help

Something is weird with that box on top of the roof. I don't know how you did it, but the properties of that object are not the same properties of a void. It does not even say "Void" in the identity parameters, and the workplane shows "not associated". Simple solution is: edit in place, delete that object, create a new void extrusion > finish extrusion > cut geometry > select the arc > select the void > finish in-place.

yeah just unjoin the geometry and it becomes a standard void again, The problem is for some reason that the void won't cut the extrusion in the place it needs to.
That wierd object is the conclusion of cutting the simple void from the extrusion. as you can't leave a void not cutting anything when finishing in place.

The action of Cut Geometry needs to happen within the edition of the model in place, not after the in-place is finished.

alfmedina I know this.
You can in fact create a family that is a void to cut things outside of the model in place environment, but that's another topic.
What I want to know is why the void won't cut the Extrusion using the correct methods?

I didn't opened your family but just a question: is the VOID in the same category of the extrusion? in this case "Roof"?

I don't know. I simply deleted that box you had on top of the roof, made a new void box, and this one cut properly.

Yeah it's an inplace component, so basically made the extrusion, then made the void to cut the extrusion to find it won't cut
The Roof Profile is too complex just just use, roof by extrusion - roof by footprint etc. so model in place seemed the way to go.
Alfmedina so did I but no luck did you make your void exactly the same size as mine, or just something completely different?

Stupid question but both the roof and the void are in the roof category - right?
Remember - you have to cut the roof before you close the void family.... and it has to actually intersect the roof!

I would redo the sketch of the curved extrusion. It's made of little segments, that could be simplified to be a single arc that goes from one side to the other, both at top and bottom. Those little segments seem to be creating a problem with the void, because the edges of the void coincide with the projection of those segments when you see the roof in plan view and wireframe mode. I suggest to make a clean sketch for the extrusion, then make a void, and it will cut with no problems.

Yes Typhoon and Hub, it is all part of the same modeled in place roof, open the file and you will see
Good stuff, that's exactly where my problem lies Alf, Ideally I didn't want to change the sketch for the extrusion or the position of the void as I need to match the survey data, 1 simple arc changes the shape of the geometry it needs to be in those little pieces (not that little as there are only 3-5 on the segments),
I have actually tried eleminating some of the segments but the problem still persists. Really i need to keep the lines as they are so they stay consistant with the survey data. I don't see why there is an issue, The Void intersects the extrusion it should cut the geometry no matter what, I guess I've stumbled across a pretty irritating Bug in the software
