when I am trying to synchronizing to central I get a message twice saying "inches to the fourth power." then another message saying "file not saved."
so then I find myself having to exit revit and start over with a new local file.

This message has to do with your project units and it relates to disk space. If you clean up your disc space to free up more space on your network or computer your problem should be solved.

when you say project units I take it that everyone who is working on the project should be on the same units and rounding to the nearest __?

it also seems that the central file for this project is on our server and we have plenty of TB of space on the server.
I did notice that when one person had a view or sheet open that I needed to work on that is when the error came up the most. so when the three of us would complete a task we would have to synchronize right after that task e.g. if I had several lights to place on the RCP I would place one light and synchronize and then place another light and synchronize. If I tried to do too much or waited too long to synchronize the error would come up.

You should not have to Syncronize the way you are doing.
Revit uses some worksets even if you don't have worksets enabled. The one causing you problems is a view workset and or sheet. If all of you are working in the same workset view, there will be problems so try not to do that. Make another model view - name it as yours and work in that. Now the only items you will have to sync for are items two of you may want to modify. Only work in your sheet view for annotative elements.
We typically have several working plans - named for the user - that are meant to be used for modeling.

when you say "Make another model view - name it as yours and work in that."
are suggesting to create another workset for instance with my name in the title of workset? Or are you suggesting to create another plan view with my name in the title?
