I have created my families and all works well. While in plan (or level) view I need to see them in wireframe but when I switch to present in 3D view I need to be able to have them show up painted. Is there a way to add paint to my family objects so that the colors are only visible is 3D view?

I dont understand?  You have your floor plan set to wireframe, but you want your 3d view to show color?  Just add material to your families and then when in a 3d view set the Visual Style to either Shaded, Consistant colors, or Realistic. The visual style is view specific so your floor plan will still be wireframe.

I understand what you are telling me to do and I have been told this is the way to accomplish what I need. However, it does not work.

I will try and explain what I am hoping to accomplish and what I am running into.

I have a component that I have created and want to use it in my project. I want to add color to the object but so that the color is only visible in 3D view.

Anytime that I add material to the object in my family and use it in my project, regardless of what Visual Style I use the color shows through. I need the plan view to be a clear wireframe view and the 3D view to be the oly view in which the color shows through. I completely understand that I can change the Visual Style from wireframe to 3D, but even in wireframe I see the color of the material that I added.  I am not sure how to better describe this.

You need to tell us how you applied a color to your objects.  If you used Revit's material process, then everything will work so obviously, you did something else.

Here are the steps that I followed to apply color to my object.

1- Open Family

2- Select my object

3- In Properties window >Materials and Finishes I click on where it says "Default" and slect my material that I have created. The only difference between my material and the "default" (which I duplicated to create my mine) is that I have changed the >Surface Pattern to "solid fill" and changed the color from a gray to a brown.

4- Click save

5- Load into Project.

Changing the surface pattern is not the same as changing the material.  You need to apply an actual material, could be red paint and leave your surface pattern grey or white, the surface pattern will show as whatever color you choose for it in a plan view, if you apply an actual material the color will not show in a plan view if set to wireframe or hidden line but will show with consistent colors, shaded or realistic.

THE PROJECT RULES....

  1. Materials can be created in the project or in a family.
  2. Every material has to have a unique name.
  3. Once a material is created in the project or loaded into a project by way of a family, it can only be modified in the project
  4. If a family is deleted from a project, any associated materials that were loaded into the project remain.  Deleting the family does not get rid of the material.
