Is there a quick way to filter out elements from linked Revit models in every view? For instance the Architect may not need to see individual pipe fittings, or motion detectors in any of the architectural views. I understand that I can use Visibility Graphic Overrides to control the visibility of categories in each view, but it gets annoying after a while.

Try with 'View Templates'.

Yes, I prefer Pavan way too.. Edit the view setting as much as you want, create a view template and just apply it to other view..

If you have the elements you want to turn of, in workset in your link-file, you can use them in the host-file. In the host-file create new worsets named exactly as they are in your link-file, when you turn them off in host-file, those parts of the link-file will turn off.

 sorry for my english.
Worksets in linked files can be used in the host file. Worksets in the host file, with the same name as a workset in the linked file, controls visibility of the elements in the link in that workset...
Maybe better, i'm not sure, i will pick up the kids and check in later.

Hmmm... I'm using Revit 2012, I've just tried Sofus recommendation..
First I made Building A with 3 Worksets (Wall, Door & Window)
Then I made Building B with 3 Worksets with the same name (Wall, Door & Window), but for Window workset I untick the Visible in all views options, so the window will not be visible anywhere..
After I link the Building A to Building B, all windows in building A is not visible as well.. I think, that is what Sofus mean.. whatever we do to show or hide the host file will effect to all linked file with the exact same name worksets..
So for leothelionator case, if the MEP Revit file put the pipe fittings into PIPE (For example) and the motion detectors into MOTION (For example), then in the Architecture Revit file, create the exact same name worksets PIPE & MOTION, and untick the Visible in all views option.. when we link the MEP Revit file to Architecture Revit file, all the worksets with the exact same name would be hidden by worksets..

Update:
Just found out something.. if I hide the WALL, in host file, other elements being hosted to the wall still shown.. but in linked file, other elements hosted to the wall will be hidden as well..

I don't think it works with same name of worksets. The linked file its self will be in one workset. I think the worksets from the host file may not recognize each element's workset from the linked file. I checked in 2009, I don't know about higher versions.

It works fine for me in both 2012 and 2013.
I can control visibility of individual worksets in a linked file, by creating worksets named the same way in my host file. Leave them all on in your link file, and manage them in the host file.

But you really don't need to do this. If the linked file elements are already in a workset in that linked file. Just turn off that workset in the linked file through your VG settings!

But VG is viewspecific, worksets are for the entire project.

No, you are incorrect. Worksets are view specific. You can not turn them off for the entire project, you can only not load them.
For items like this you should be using the View Template tool that you have.

That image is correct and you normally use it when creating a workset and you should be using it. But you have now mandated that you need to turn ON that workset in views where you need it. That is kind of a wash. The better BEST process is to USE VIEW TEMPLATES!

Leo asked if there was a way to turn of elements in a link in every view. What i was supposed to mandate was, put them in worksets and leave all worksets on in the linked file, then its possible have full control of their visibility by creating empty worksets named the same way in the host file, or individual control of them on each view with VG.
