I've created a topography in Revit 2013 from a CAD file, but I'd still like to link that file in and view it on top of my topography, to show buildings and other site info that is not modeled. However, when I link it in it appears underneath the topo surface, so that it is not visible unless in wireframe. How can I make my linked CAD show up on top of my topography?
Thanks,
JP

Nevermind, I just found out how. With the file selected in my site plan view, there is a dropdown Draw Layer that defaults to Background, just switch that to Foreground.
The problem with this option, though, is that now it shows up on top of my buiding too. There is some info that I'd like to be masked by the building, but not the topo surface. Any other ideas?

I haven't check the help file from Autodesk or search in this forum, so my assumption would be need clarification from more experienced user..
Through my experience, you found Background and Foreground options, that mean, when you insert the CAD file (either link or import), you tick the 'Current View Only' option on left side below the 'bookmark folder'. By ticking that option, you can only have option to put the CAD file as background or foreground.
If you insert the CAF file without tick that 'Current view only' option, you should notice the 'Place at' list down below above open or cancel button.. After you insert the CAD, now you will have the ability to specify the level of your CAD drawing.. So.. if your building is 4000mm tall from Level, and you specify your CAD at 2000mm above Level, then that CAD will still be covered by the building.
Attached is the example.. the CAD drawing is the circle and the rectangle is a 3D box family I assume as the building, created in Revit..
But just like I said before, we need more experienced user to confirm that I'm not giving the wrong information..

Ok, thanks. I'll try inserting it not at Current View only. The problem with that, though, is then it will show up in every view

you can always turn off items in your views, by template or one at a time.

Yeah, that just gets obnoxious for lots of views. I'll try to manage it with View Templates.

After I post things in http://www.revitcity.com/forums.php?action=viewthread&thread_id=28940
I remember about your problem.. :D But, this solution I think would be applicable only if you use central file because I'm going to recommend workset.. So, maybe it will help..
After you insert the CAD file into Revit, create a workset for that CAD file.. for example CADHIDE.. after that, make sure you untick the 'Visible in all views' option.. So you will not see any elements of that workset anywhere on your views.. Change the CAD file workset to CADHIDE, it should be vanish from your view after revit done change the workset.. Go to the view you want to show it, go to Visibility/Graphic Overrides option, go to workset tab then change the CADHIDE workset from Global Setting to Show.. you should get your CAD file shown in the view you want and hidden anywhere else..

That sounds good, but only works with a central file? Since I'm the only one working on this project, there is only one file.

Unfortunatelly... Yes.. worksets only available on central file..
Well, maybe other user might have other options.. but for now, I think we only have view template for your case..
