I'm trying to make  simple stair which consists of two runs connected by a 5" landing, all in a straight line.  The difference in height is 18'8".  I have tried to make stair by component and by sketch.  Eventhough I am assigning the lower levels to the base level of the stair and the upper level to the top level of the stair they just don't seem to be working.  I've looked at Wiki help, watched a few YouTube videios and am not getting the desired results.  After I create the stair and then go to edit them, I don't get a filled dot at both ends, nor do I get shape handles.  (Like the videos and help info says I should.)  I do get one filled dot and the flip arrows.  I'm working with R13.  Since I'm still fairly new to R, I'm assuming I'm missing some basic checkbox or fundamental command.  Please advise and any advice is appreciated in advance.

P.S. What does "Extend Below Base" mean and how do I deal with/work around it?

When you use stair by component you will assign your bottom level (First Floor) and your top level (Second Floor) which would give you your 18'-8".  From there you will click and drag your stair until you get to the desired height/number of risers to reach the first landing and then click and release, then you will slide your mouse 5' away from the stair and click (this will give you your landing) and then drag until all of the risers are used to reach your level and click the green check mark.  Once you have done this and if you want to change the number or risers in the first run or second run you need to click on the stair and Edit Stair. from there if you click on either the lower run or the upper run you will get arrows that you can drag to increase or decrease the number of risers.

Thank you TeaFoe5.  It finally worked.  One question..Should I always make stairs by beginning with the lowest level?  Will it work by starting the stairs from the top level?  I would think that if you create stairs and then assign levels to the top and bottom of the stair, it would adjust,. right?

The stairs are ment to be drawn from a lower level to an upper level.  You HAVE to assign a level to the top and bottom of the stair in order to be able to create it.  You can however do for example assign your base level to be second floor with an offset of -18'-8" and your top floor to be second floor and later go in and change the levels as needed and the stair will adjust (if the overall height changed you will have to put in more or less risers) but that is not the correct way to do things.  You should start as I said with assigning a base level and a top level (first floor, second floor).  Draw from the lowest level up.... after all if you were really constructing the stair you wouldn't start at the top Winking
