when I'm placing structual elments on the negative levels (below grade) I get an error message-

"None of the created elements are visible in Floor Plan: Level 1 View. You may want to check the active view, its Parameters, and Visibility settings, as well as any Plan Regions and their settings."

i'm using Revit 2013 but has structure and MEP installed as well. So when I'm selecting columns fron the structure family or even the regular 2013 family they will not work. When I look at my 'structural levels' the below grade levels are not there as well.

I've tried all VG settings and cannot figure this one out.

The columns you placed are probably there, change your detail level of the view to fine, some things won't show in coarse. Then change your properties box discipline to structural as you are placing structural columns which may not show in architectural, then adjust the view range to see below. To do a quick check you can change the graphic display option to wireframe which will allow you to see through a floor or something in the way.
