Hello,
I cant copy area tags from one file to another. I only need to because I messed up and went to separate files for existing and new site area analysis. Then I realized I messed up because I can have two separate area plans in the same file if I call one gross and one rentable. This distinction can be ignored in my case and I have used this work around before. My problem is that I can copy all components over except the area tags because of the gross vs. rentable distinction. My error message is:
Can't Copy Area Tags. The target view doesn't have the same Area Scheme as the original view.
Any Ideas? TIA.

The error message says it all. You can't copy items from one area scheme to another. The two default area schems as you point out are Gross and Rentable. They both hold special properties in Revit as they relate to BOMA (Building Operators and Managers Association). BOMA calcs are done for commercial buildings in the US and Canada. Revit moves the area lines around in these two area schemes based on BOMA rules.
If you are not doing BOMA area calculations, you can still use area plan schemes that you add to Revit. Under settings>area settings>new then define your own types. Any new types you add will not respond to the BOMA rules. You will simply place via drawing or picking area lines. You can then also define your own area types via shared parameters and apply those new area types to your area schemes for color fills and scheduling purposes.
One of these days I intend to show on my newly established blog as area schemes are not well documented and a mystery to most users.

Hi Tom,
Thanks. I dont know why I didnt think to click the new button to add. It is obvious in hindsight. The good news is I should be able to recopy with compatibility? Or, I guess not. Oh well, Just part of the cost of learning.
Thanks again,
Sam
P.S. I marked your bog.

I guess this means I'll actually have to place some content out on my blog now!
I think I will start with the area plan thingy.

I posted some downloadables (DWF & PDF) on my blog in September; titled "Analyze This!"
http://taylor-tech.com/blogs/getEntryById/35/entry.html
I use these in my Revit Essentials classes around the country... they should provide some visual examples regariding area analysis and project phasing.
Cheers!
