Please help to solve this puzzle.I created two families, one was a hollow metal window, another a door.I set both families with frame secback as an instance with 1"; frame depth as an instance too with 6".After I placed both families into a project as attached, the setback for the window was 3" plus and different from the door, which is 1". What was wrong? Thanks!

If that setback parameter is an INSTANCE parameter, ti is obvious that they can be diferent and you must set them in the instance properties window. Did you make them as shared parameters?

Are you saying the actual setback was 3" while the setback value was set to 1"?

Sorry, WWHub, I thought the question and the answer to your question was in the first post.
The setback for both door and window were set as 1" from the exterior face in each family.
But after I placed them into the project, the setback for doors stay as 1", but for windows, the setback changed based on the thickness of the wall. One was 3" another 3.5".
Please help!

Then the faulty family was built incorrectly. Did you flex it in the family to see if it actually works? Flex it wit a BIG offset.

sllana/WWHub, thanks!
I re-started from scratch, changed setback from an "Instance" to "Type", and using exterior face as the reference plan only for everything, i.e. "Frame Depth", "Glass", "Rabbet" and "Glazing Stop". Now it worked as should be.
The thing I don't get was, why can't I set up 3 reference plans, one for frame exterior face, one for setback, one for glazing, then using each for different extrusions/sweeps? Does that mean using a single reference plan is the rule 101 for creating families?
Hoping that your guys can give me more tips on that. Thanks again!

Absolutly not! First - always add work planes before you model. For wall based families, I build around a main (setback) workplane that is initially set far away from the wall and located by a setback dimension from the face of the wall. Usually about 2' ! This makes sure that Revit only associates elements with my work planes. Then you always flex the family with every different switch / parameter that you set.
