I would like to proclaim the Revit 2013 materials editor a P.O.S! Goes real slow and is the culprit of many crashes I've had since upgrading to 2013.

P.O.S!

End of rant.

Also, when in the materials editor, and theres the preview of your material, usually the preview is very dimly lit and is never a realistic representation of what the material really looks like when you apply it then render.

Can you turn n a light in the previews or something?

Likewise,  I am creating a new 2013 drawing template to suit my needs  from the standard 2013 Architectural Template, nothing complicated. My machine is a Intel I7 with 16GB memory, very standard & uncomplicated.I have created a new Material (different kind of grass) by duplicating something similar and then trying to assignone of the standard Material Render Appearances to it.  Revit crashed when I try to close the dialogue box.I read that Autodesk is offering solutions like reinstall Revit, do this and that in  Windows.Rubbish!  I am not going to muck around with my Windows 7 Professional 64!    It runs everything else perfectly!Autodesk, you do your own thorough testing, I am not going to do it for you!Revit 2009 was great, then the rot set in!  you better get it right for Revit 2014, I am starting to loose faith!

Just installed 2013 Update 2 build (20121003_2115) (64-bit).   It appears to fix my previous problem.I still remain unconvinced that Autodesk can deliver a relatively  bug free upgrade every year.Every 5 years for a new release would be more realistic.

By the way,  when installing Update 2, it just sits there and appears to do nothing for 10-15 minutes, then continues.

"By the way,  when installing Update 2, it just sits there and appears to do nothing for 10-15 minutes, then continues."  - I updated my Revit 2013 (2013 Update 2 build (20121003_2115) (64-bit)) and it took only 10 seconds...
