I am trying to document an existing stair from 1974. It has precast concrete treads with open risers, each tread tapers
on its underside from the sides of the stairs to the middle where there is a central stringer below, so the treads look
like wide upside-down triangles in elevation. I have been unable to create a tread shape other than a rectangle. Is
there a way to create a custom tread shape within the stair tool? If not, any ideas on how to create this stair? I am
using Revit 2012.
Thanks

Look at using a nosing profile.

Thanks for the response.
I have only been able to get a nosing profile to change the shape of the tread in one direction: back to front (if you cut
a section right up the center of a run of stairs, the shape of the tread will change in section if I create a new nosing
profile). But I want to change the shape of the treads as you look at the stair from the front: side to side. So as you
view the stair as you approach it head on you would see the treads tapering from the left and right edges to the center
(see attached sketch).
Can the nosing profile change this?

Your original post was not as clear as your last post. No - The nosing can not do what you want side to side. You may have to create a tread family and build your stairs in-place.
I have seen this question here before. I'm not sure what that dicscussion lead to but you might find it if you search the forums.

I don't think your going to be able to do this very easily. You might try to create it as part of the railing system, I'm not 100% sure on how it would all work out but this is something quick I threw together. Highlighted in green is a railing profile

Sometimes you have to do that out-of-the-box: http://www.revitcity.com/gallery.php?action=view&gallery_id=15830

It looks like in 13 you can build the stair and turn off the treads then just add your tread family in the tread locations. Watch this vid http://designreform.net/learning/2012/05/14/revit-2013-component-based-stairs

2013 has come a long way with stairs since 2012 and I'm a lot happier with it! I think you are stuck with using the rail and balluster option for 2012 though. Typhoon thats gallary photo a nice post, I got something similar to that out of the Mastering Revit 2012 book, that book has been a great reference.

Wow! Thank you all so much for your responses and thoughts. I will investigate each and see what I come up with.
And now I know to look forward to 2013 for more stair options.
Thanks again.

Just did this using 2013, component stairs - no treads - no risers and a tread family placed from elevation view.

Just figured it out. Thought I'd post it. I took your advice and used the new stair tool-no treads, no risers and inserted
a tread family.
