Revit 2012
I;m trying to re-create the roof of this residential project - see pictures below. I could really need some good advise here guys..
I'm at my wits end...
The roof ridge is not centered as you can see from the aerial pic
Problems:1. I can't join the roofs with the join/roof command. "Errorart of the roof to be joined misses the target face."
2. The gable/California roof does not come out correctly either
3. I tried to create the roof in 3 different pieces but can't get it to work...basciall I can't re-create the roof at all as of now.
Please...let me know if you have any ideas...
thanks

You can create that roof (by footprint) in two pieces only, no need of that and the gable roof will join to the main roof, create the main roof by the perimeter ( "L" shape) you have then you can change the slope and height / offset position of each eave.

In my idea, you must create two roof by footprint.
The large roof below you create and define the slope, define the plate offset from base for four side of the sketch if they are different height. Then finish
The small roof above you create the same the large roof, just change the height offset of the roof from base. Then finish
Now goto 3D view, goto Modify -> Join/unjoin Roof. click on the edge gable of small roof and click on the plane of the large roof you want to join.
After all, you go to Home ->see opening section -> click vertical opening -> choose the roof -> and sketch the region you want to open/eliminate the part of the roof you want.

Typhoon is correct, you only need 2 roofs byu footprint and just use an offset to get the high level (or low level) that you want and then use the join roof command after both roofs are created to get them to join together.

Follow up question:
I managed to slope the roof and adjust the plate height...thanks for pointing that one out.
When I tried to join the 2 roofs I either get the error message - can't join roofs;
or
when I managed to join it only manages to join part of the roof (I actually changed the plate height -1' to get this one)
@Teafo5...I saw what you did and managed to do the same in the past but for whatever reason I can't get same results...
See attached pics below
Please let me know if you can think of anything that I'm not doing right...thanks

Nope, still can't.... Use free softwares like "Screenhubter" or "JING" to capture images like this...
Anyway... are you using the "Join/Unjoin roof" tool or the "join/Unjoin" tool ? there's a difference here...
Use the first... now select the edge of the gable roof then select the FACE of the MAIN roof...

Hi Tectacoma,
Typhoon is right, but you have to do a little bit of fancy foot work.
Your main roof has to extend down far enough with the valleys at an angle in your roof by footprint sketch.
I have a attached a few freehand sketches here...
In general I think the best way to go is to make the main roof too big to start, then join the roof of the gable end like you have done correctly, and last go back and edit the sketch of the main roof by picking the valleys of the gable roof and then offsetting just enough so that the roofs can stay joined. Trim to tightly and their won't be enough of the main roof left to extend and attach to.

Tectacoma,
The attached snapshots so the way you might edit the roof sketches to achieve the effect you're trying to create.
