I am trying to make an independent view of a certain plan in Revit 2012 but the independent view option is grayed out and there seems to be no way- if I use duplicate then the changes are replicated ? Please help what can be the way out of this mess.

You want to duplicate the view either with or without detailing. You don't want to duplicate as a dependent view.
Make independent is a tool to copnvert a dependent view into an independent view.

I want to create a version of the floor plan as another option- in a way that that the changes made to one of them donot affect the other one at all ?If I duplicate it with or without detailing and then do a few changes in the wall-layouts it starts aftecting my earlier floor plans as well!

If I convert it into a dependent view and then make it independent will it allow me to make changes to this independent view that are not reflected in the dependent view ?

This has nothing to do with views. It sounds like you don't understand what Revit is. It is a 3D program. If you change any 3D element, it changes that element in any view it is in.
Dependent views - change/add any 2D item and it shows in the dependent & host view.
Duplicvated views - all 2D elements are independent.
If you want to change 3D elements independently, you have to use Design Options.
