I'm probably missing something very obvious, but does anyone know how to make a salt box roof? The only thing I can think of is to make a gable larger than the roof I actually want and then using the model-opening tab to cut the part of the gable off that is of no use to me. Is this the best way to do it?
Thanks for any help.

I'm fairly new to revit, but I think I have made one by mistake. Do roof by footprint, sketch the area the same way you would a gable, but have one slope higher than the other.

If that doesn't work, then have only 1 side sloped. Not sure though.

Excuse my Midwest ignorance, but I have no idea what a saltbox roof is.
If you are a subscription customer, log-in to the subscription site and click on the AU2005 link.
There you will find a lot of great material from Autodesk University 2005 (AU).
One of the class handouts has a great guide to creating all sorts of roof types:

Download the class datasets and look at the PDF file for different roofs and the best way to tackle them.

I believe it is very simple.
what you have to do is :
1. Sketch gable the roof the ways it is expalined on the roof tutorials, determining the lower roof plate desired.
2. Before you finish the sketch you right-click on the line representing the eave of the higher roof plate
3. Click on properties, and change the value of the "Plate Offset From Base" toreflect the desired height from the lower plate.
4. Finish Roof.
Voila.
I hope this works for you

I would think roof by extrusion would be the easiest way.
BTW a saltbox is roughly a small square house with a roof starting on the first floor top plate, sometimes lower, much lower, going up to the ridge, and coming back down to a second floor top plate. The theory is the lower roof is to face the north to divert the cold north winds over the roof.

Sorry, this would be much easier to explain.

Thanks, y'all. For the two uses, I ended up using a regular gable with a vertical opening (where I needed part of the gable to continue to the eave level and part of it to stop short), and the gable with the height offset. That seems to make the most sense to me. I am finding that setting the height offset gives me the added advantage that the roof moves with my wall when changes occur.
Many thanks for the help.

The way setting the lower plate while starting the roof sketch and the modification of the roof line (purple) by right clicking and modifying the height as desired to determined the highest plate is the easiest way to create the saltbox roof. it will be modified togeter to the reference wall if the wall is modified.
you must try the steps I mentioned above.

You must be careful NOT to change the height at the roof property box because it will change the roof plate on the supportingroof walls.
What you need todo is to ONLY change the plate height (Higher or lower) of the roof's edge line that defines the roof slope.
