is there a way to move the elevation mark so that it is located outside of the triangle?

I've done this before and believe all you need to do is edit the "pointer" family and move the text out.

Hey becca, I forgot to mention that you will need to "edit" the family from the project browser under the Families - Annotation Symbols. Locate the family, right click then edit. This will open the family like normal. Then you can move the text out a bit, then reload it in your project.

thanks mike - I was able to do that. Just thought there might have been a setting or check box that I wasn't seeing in the properties menu.
