hi guys!
as suggested by some of you i am trying to make a family by importing an autocad file. i will use this only for renderings so it doesnt matter if the file is huge and slows it down. but i have a few problems with this file and would appreciate if somebody could tell me whats wrong and the steps to fix it...
- the file cannot be imported into a project. i get an error message that i do not understand.
- the file has the imported assembly and an extrusion made by me. if i apply a material to the components then the extruded one will be rendered with the correct material, the imported part not. why?
- is it possible to have different materials for different surfaces? i wasnt able to do it on the imported part.
thank you
here is the family. (12 megs.. sorry, hosted it on my webpage)

after a whole load of googeling i managed to solve problem 1 and 2.
1 solved by redoing all from scratch, and still dont know why it happened in the first place, so if somebody could tell me i would appreciate.
2 solved with this info i found on the web: the autocad file should have some layers inside, all the components should be on layers different than layer 0. so i exploded all blocks, made a new layer and placed everything there.. now it works..

Actually, if you want different materials for different items in your imported CAD, then each item to have a different material MUST be on a unique layer. This is how you control materials for imports. Manage tab - object styles - see image.
Also remember that "THE PROJECT RULES". Once a material is assigned in the project, it has to be changed in the project.
We have many posts here that explain why you could not import the file.

thanks for your answer..
does this mean that i have to restart from autocad, put all the things on different layers and then import it again?
is there a way to import the file again and replace teh existing one? sort of an "update" without having to reposition it and place all the dependencies?
thanks
igor

You wrote "...does this mean that i have to restart from autocad, put all the things on different layers and then import it again?" << I don't know. I've told you haw to map materials to CAD files, you have to determine what you need to do.
And you asked "...is there a way to import the file again and replace teh existing one?" < Yes, when you link a CAD file, it can be reloaded.
