I work for an arch firm and this is our first time trying to coordinate using Revit and we need to coordinate with our outside consultants and we are thinking of using our FTP site . I have been all over the internet and seen many different ideas on how to do this but I cant seem to make it work.

Questions...

once I save our file to the  FTP as a central file can I continually work on it or do I need to make a copy of the central file and edit the copy?????

If I use the copy how do I sync with central if it is on the FTP???????

And if I use the copy and am unable to sync updates to FTP how do the consultants get the updates?????

Can you tell I confused????

Please assist me with this as I am totally lost. I think I need step by step instructions on this.

Pretty much the only process I've seen is everyone (including consultants) placing a copy of their model on the FTP site, then everyone downloads all (or some) of the models to use as backgrounds. Nobody works with the files on the FTP site. I've seen uploads/downloads done on a set shedule (usually Thursday evenings), or on an as-needed basis.

That sounds like a good plan. How do I as the architect use the consultant mode from the FTP as a background????

I think I get what needs to happen so please correct me if I am worng anybody.

step 1. Each consultant saves a copy of my model from the FTP to their server, then makes a copy as a local file to work on.

step 2. After working on their local model they would then synq it with their copy of my central model and copy that to the FTP and overwrite the existing central model.

step3. I then copy that new central model they made with their info to my server which would replace my copy of the central model and then synq it with my copy of the local file.

step 4. now my local file is updated and has all info and the process could be reversed as necessary.

Overcourse this will only really work if no one changes the name of the files.

Again please let me know if this is correct!!!!!

The architect links in the consultant's model, copy/monitors those things he needs, an controls the graphics of the consultant model according to his needs.

As TKennedy says - DON'T USE THE FTP to host your Central!  The File on the FTP should just be a copy - it does not have to be a central.  You keep your central in your office project folders.  You copy your consultant's files from the FTP folder to your project folder - no need to open - just use the file copy.   Once the consultant file is linked in, you can update by copying the latest file from the FTP and use the manage links / "reload from".

Since you update the linked file using the "reload from", IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT IT IS CALLED.

Something that seems to confuse people is Autodesk saying that 'everyone works in one file'. This is generally true, but only inside one office. Everyone in your office will work in the one project file, but the consultants will have their own files. They will not be working in yours, they will only be linking them into theirs. The FTP site is only there to transfer files between offices.
