Hope this makes sense.

We currently have our mullions as a detail item family imported into an enlarged callout details. No problem. I can create a sweep for a cornice (e.g.) from an imported profile family>editing the wall assembly modify types sweeps or add it as a sweep to the wall assembly one wall at a time.  Is there a process to edit or create a window that has the mullion as a sweep the same way as a wall assembly so when we cut a section we see the mullion in detail?

You can always add detail components to families that will show in designated views if that is what you were asking.

You can also add sweeps in a family and control their visibility seperately.

So you could have simple a model sweep for 3D purposes which is turned off in plan and replaced with 2D linework.

Thank you wwhub. I would like to add the mullion into the window family so that when a seciotn was cut through the window the mullion would show in greater detail. I wanted to eliminate the step of importing a detail family into a detail callout view.

DON'T do this as a sweep.  There is no need to model spacves you never see like the thickness of that tube.  Instead, model a simple rectanglular sweep for 3D and 2d linework fo plan and or section views.
