i'm using revit structure 2012, and i have a main file with multiple files linked in. i'm trying to dimension to the structural beams linked in but it will not allow me to pick the beams. at the bottom of the screen it says " select references, then click in empty space to place dimension." what does this mean and how can i get this to work. thanks

it says " select references, then click in empty space to place dimension." <<< This is the standard way of dimensioning.  If you don't understand this, then you need to do some Revit tutorials on beginning Revit.

I've taken tutorials and classes. my question is why i can't dimension to the linked in beams. why would it say this and not let me  pick the beam to dimension to.

Start from what you are dimensioning to, then use your tab key at the beam.  You have to pick a beam reference.

If your linked file beams are not parallel with what you are dimensing to, then they will not dimension to that.
