I have a green roof on my 2nd flr with a patio and planters. What is the best way to fill in between w/ soil/earth? Do I create a slab and change materials? I tried doing a topo by picking the plane and changing the elevation, but that didn't work

do you need to actually show a thickness of material in any sections?
If not, you could just use the paint tool and apply an earthy material to the top face of your slab.

If I have to, I could do as you say Absolute. But I would like to try within reason make the model as realistic as I can. In particular having a section cut thru it and showing the true thickness of the earth/soil. I did create a slab and change the material to site-earth. Works well but my slab is sloped for drainage so there's that triangle where nothing shows up. I could model a mass in that triangle space but it would suck up too much juice. I know eventually I probably will just do the easy route but was curious to know if there was a way to do what I am trying to do

Why not just an in-place family with the earth material?

You can also make it a slab, and show various layers of rock fabric, and soil as a variable thickness, and then you can slope the top to drains, etc.

i do what WW suggested... in place component. i usually put an instance material parameter on it so you don't have to edit in-place just to change materials. that's exacty what i did for the attached plaza image (for water and grass)
