Hello there,
I have a client that requested we sell them Revit families for their products so they can give them to designers/architects to use and spec in their projects.
I'm curious to know if anyone has suggestions on how to go about pricing this? Since this is our first time doing such a job. They have hundreds of familes needing creation and I didn't know the best method/formula to give cost estimate and go about this. The families will be parametric, have type catalogs when necessary, and hold information for scheduling.
I'm open to suggestions, thanks,
LJ

Personally, we give an average price for each family since some can take an hour and others can take 4 hours. That average price varies based on the quantity of families they are having you create. 1-10 is $250 per family for ex. while 50-100 is maybe $100 per family.
Depending on how fast and well you create content, you may have to tweak this formula and pricing to make you most profitable.
Of course, I'd be happy to help in your endeavor :-)

Do you know of a service that does healthcare families and casework? The client usually does plam casework, so using KI or Herman Miller is not an option.

I can't speak for others, but we do all kinds of families (including those you mentioned) on a contract basis even though our site is specific to modern furniture. If it is something you want to discuss more, send an email to info@therevitcollection.com and I will reply promptly.

Adgshinz,
You looking for someone to help you with the families or are you simply asking for your use?
Thanks,
LJ

I'm not normally the type of person to push my own product on others but if you are looking for medical/healthcare families, I'm putting together a collection in the link below my signature. If you have something specific in mind, I can build it right away and post it within a week. Unfortunately due to the nature of what I produce and the quality standards I hold myself to, I do charge a fee.

I had to figure out what to charge to, but then quickly came across the problem of ownership. If you have it written in your agreement that they retain ownership of the models, then that's bad for you. Charge an hourly rate and provide them with a flowchart of how you modeled a "similar" family. Then factor in how long it would take to model something they want, bill them and then build it as fast as you can. Quality wins you more work. Please don't slap together junk models. It hurts you and it hurts other RevitCity-type people trying to make a living too. Clients LOVE little extra things too. If you see that they may need another small easy to build piece of equipment to go along with a chair or stand, create it for free and give it to them. This will keep the client happy and coming back to you.
If you retain ownership of the model (highly recommended) then you can always sell them to someone else. That is where you can make a business since the model is finished, profit becomes 100% at that point.
The short answer: If its just you, charge between $18 and $20/hr for your time. If you make a profit, you've done well. If you don't, you just learned a valuable lesson and should charge more.
