I've noticed a few problems with the component based stairs in Revit 2013:
Handrail visibility below the cut plane is quirky - the handrail does not reliably appear as drawn in 3D. The handrails will be cropped, not showing extensions, etc. It looks like stair treads or landings show as "above" handrails, blocking their visibility. Handrails to Is there a way to fix this?
The tread numbering tool does not seem to work for multi-level stairs (above the first modeled level). Is this possible? Also, the tread numbering tool doesn't seem to work certain views. For example, you can't number treads for a stair (from level 1 to level 2) on a level 2 plan, even though you can see the stair below the cut plane. It doesn't seem like you can tread number a sketch-based stair. This tool has a lot of promise, but very limited functionality right now.
Also, there's no way to add a dimension from top/bottom stair to the handrail extensions. I've been faking the annotation using a detail line, but there should be an easier way.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Virginia........I've been pulling my hair out dealing with the very same issues. I've tried absolutely everything, and have searched all the forums I could find, with no success. At least I'm not the only one dealing with this. I'll try and remember to respond if I find a solution. Good luck.

Found this after wasting 3 hours trying to get the Handrail extension to show in plan. Come on Autodesk!

I found a possible source of the problem here:
http://whatrevitwants.blogspot.ca/2012/11/extents-of-revit-2013-railings-bug-when.html
Turns out when you remove all the balusters from a rail the "flip orientation" arrows don't know where to go and end up far away from the railing. I had problems with the railing not showing up at all in section views but when I flipped the elevation to look the opposite direction the railing would appear. The railings dlip arrow was behiond the section cut line so the rail wouldn't show.
Possible solutions:
1) add in baluster and then shut the balusters off in the section views
2) create small blusters that look like wall mounts.
