Maybe I am missing something simple.

Is there a way to update nested families automatically?  I have nested families (usually detail components) which need to update as they are edited.  It is a pain to go through and manually update these.

Maybe an add-in is available?

There is nothing automatic that I know of and I don't think there should be. 

We make our project managers responsible for this because it needs to be controlled.  You can't have a detail change in an issued project without documenting that change.
