It would be nice to be able to have a graphic property that allows you to set every other (or up to the 3rd, 4th, 5th...) line to a different color. This would work just like MS Excel, presentation-wise, and would ease the ability to view a door's information across the schedule. I like that you can place the door number on either side of the schedule, but it only helps so much. Also, can there be a parameter that allows you to either reference the abbrevation list or allow you to type in the abbreviations for door/frame finishes and materials prior to entering information so you don't get any accidentals? This way they appear in the drop down list and you simply select them rather than typing one in and it not being the abbreviation your project demands. I realize this is somewhat existing already, but it is too easy to get lazy and make a mistake. Oh and make it possible to select multiple doors at a time so you can edit them all at once in the case that you need to use instance properties. It could be a right click option or something.
Something for the future also... would it be possible to have a legend that you can place the elevations of your model doors into? That way if anything changes (light portals, grill sizes, etc...) the door type detail will automatically update. This is more of a luxury item than anything, but could also be handy.

You can address some of these issues now.
We sometimes add a heavy line in paper space over top of the schedule lines at every 5 lines. THERE IS A COORDINATION ISSUE HERE so you have to pay attention to this.
If you fill in materials from the schedule rather than from the element properties, you will get a pull-down. That allows you to have all XYZ materials listed the same. Doesn't solve the abbreviation standards but helps.
Learn to use work schedules. By doing this, you can sort by any parameter you have that is common between multiple elements then don't itemize every instance. Then you can fill them all in at once.
^^^^ THIS IS A POWERFUL TOOL IF YOU LEARN TO USE IT !!! I use working schedules for a lot of different applications.
Use a separate legend and place it on the same sheet. Just use simple text to label the different "Types" referred to in the schedule.
