hi, i'm new to revit and am trying to find a way to extend the exterior finish and sheathing wall layers down over the floor slabs in my exterior elevations. i tried to modify and unlock those layers in the properties preview, but revit won't allow me to do this unless i also unlock and extend the framing, which i don't want to do. i'm sure i'm missing something, but have no idea what!

In the preview make sure you are in section view and zoom way in on the bottom (or top if you want the top extended) of the wall and there is a lock on each layer, unlock the layers you want extended. The parameter settings for the wall extension is in the first window that pops up (Element Properties) when you select the model wall and go to properties. It is the "Base Offset" and or "Top Offset" parameters.

Just a slight correction its actually the base extension and top extension parameters that control this.

Thank you, but after I unlock the wall layers in the section preview and click "OK", I receive an error message from Revit that says "Can not extend layers of the highlighted vertically compound wall". Any ideas about why I get this response? Thanks.

Not sure as i've never received this error. Post a sample file or some screenshots showing the exact make up of the wall and what you are trying to do when the error occurs...
