This is a simple face-based family that will attach to ANY surface. If you've loaded it to a project without a floor, the cursor will show a circle with a slash symbol and clicking will not place the family. If there is no floor or surface to attach to, it can still be placed by clicking the Place on Work Plane button from the Placement panel of the contextual tab. The family will be then be placed at the default level which is Level 1. To pick a new host, simply click the Pick New button from the Work Plane panel of the contextual tab. You then have the option to either place it by Face or Work Plane by clicking the appropriate buttons from the Placement panel.

I made a video of this as well a while back. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzKE2OU9Hho
It is amazing that people who have known revit for quite some time didn't realize you could place a face based family in a plan view and not just a 3d view.
But yes, you didn't attach a family in regards to your message.

How do you replace another piece of furniture that is floor based with a face based family like this chair? I am trying to change out several chairs in a restaurant at once by selecting all instances and the two objects dont seem to be interchangable.

Just thinking of trying this one, but kinda not sure if the guide will work on a specific design of furniture work.
