I had this problem the other day but a simple restart of revit and my computer fixed the problem for me.

I have this problem constantly, it seems to take an age to fire up & restarting just doesn't fix it. Anythning I can change in the settings / file locations to speed this up as it's totally frustrating!!!!

I still have issues with a slow library but have noticed only one thing that can help... make sure if you are creating custom materials - check the file size of the .jpg you are mapping to- keeping this file size below 1mb can greatly improve efficiency/speed of materials library. I am still not a fan of this new materials library in 2013 as it could be simplified and have the same end result- too many windows that do not serve a purpose- especially if you are creating custom materials(which by the way not takes twice as long because you have to duplicate not only the material but also the "host" material) hopefully autodesk will clean this up in 2014.

Also having same problem with material library in 2013. It's terrible! Every year they update Revit it only gets worse. Instead of moving all the tools around so they are harder to find and changing the way the material library looks (which used to work perfect) they need to focus on making Revit actually work instead of it freezing up all the time or exiting out of itself and losing your work. I feel like I have to save every 2 min! Fed up with it and extremely frustrated!

Random UVW mapping... just another bug that needs fixing... definitely noticed. keeping my fingers crossed for a cleaned up Revit in 2014. I dont need any "new" features. I think if autodesk wants to make this program a standard (which i know thats the intent) they should work on getting manufacturers together and beef up their standard libraries. Dont get me wrong their are a lot of sources out there including Revitcity but have you ever tried to create an MEP Library on your own? Im sure the thought behind not pushing more libraries is they see it as competition for the companies already out there trying to sell content but if they cant put all of there energies into creating a truly flawless program they better be working on something. haha- sorry for the rant... back to random uvw mapping - have noticed there are times when the only way out of this is a restart of Revit.

To speed up the library set the VIEW TYPE to TEXT VIEW.

a restart of revit does help, and I find that using custom high-res materials over a network slow it down too.
Under the manage ribbon you can purge unused, click select none, and scrol down to materials and get rid of ones you know you will not be using

Change all the fly outs in Material Browser and Asset Browser to Text View.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

I'm ALWAYS having slow mat list issues.... Lots of things seem to take FOREVER in r 2013. Updated the vid card & drivers & that didn't help.
I hate the new material list thing. Painting takes a lifetime!
And, a minute ago, while trying to change a colour, Revit just shut down without warning. This release bugs me, big time!
The change in the stairs is not enough to make this old gal happy.....
