....at regular points in the line.  Like a gas line with "G" in it, water line with "W", storm sewer line with "SS", etc.?  Revit is so lame in its site tools and I am trying to find work arounds.

i saw a tutorial on generic model line based families that you can make the lines you descibed. sorry i cannot be of more help but maybe it will start you in a direction. if i can find a link I will post it back for you. i thnk i saw it on Autodesk Universty's web site.  If you are on a subscription autodesk it is availible to you, you just need to sign up.

I found these some time ago I believe on this site, I'm not sure. I haven't used them in awhile but if I remember correctly, they worked just fine. If nothing it may help point you in the right direction.

Edit Type, you will have to create a new type for each letter you need.

Through our reseller we've asked this question @ autodesk, they sayed this wasn 't possible. The only way was as Johnzo added (I asume I did not opened the families) through a line based family.
