We have begun our first project in Revit. So the few that are working on it are extremely new to the software.

We are quickly burning through our Fee and thought of using autoCAD and our existing CAD details for wall sections and details and all other detials needed since we are much quicker at this point in producing these in AutoCAD than in revit.

I assume that we can import our cad files (linked): detials; wallsections; ect. into Revit and have the section tages and callouts reference these details. Is this just the wrong approach? will my Revit file become unmanagable? does anyone have any suggestions/ tips on how to proceed with this?

We would like to take advantage of the coordination abilities of Revit (ie. when we inset and relocate tags and details they automatically update) however, don't want to create more work and aggrevation in the end.

Thanks

Yes you can do it this way if you would prefer for now.  You will eventually need to start a template for your office see this link for some help there

http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/Revit/enu/Community/Articles/Building_a_Revit_Template

You can link in Autocad and still have your section and callouts refer to these details using the reference other view on the option bar so that if you move a detail it will still automatically update.

You will need to verify that the layers you bring in from CAD will work with the lineweights of REVIT for printing.  When we started we took all of out typical details from CAD and converted them to REVIT and put them in a template for easy use.

Eventually you will become proficient enough to be able to do all of your detailing in REVIT and it will be faster than linking in details from CAD.  Good luck!
