I've already scoured the forums for an answer.  No luck.  So, thanks ahead of time for the help.

I have a section cut in my Revit Structure model.

I want to insert a CAD file of the architect's matching section.

After inserting it, I can't see it.

It IS there.  I CAN select it (by luckily picking it out of thin air) and it will show up as a blue tinted, selected object.  But, as soon as I unselect it, it dissapears.  I've had this problem a lot before, and usually if I zoom out a good bit, the linked file will be visible.  But when I zoom in tight, it dissappears.  However, in this case, it doesn't show at all no matter the zoom level.

The good news is that it DOES show in print preview, and it DOES print.

But it's really difficult to work with it, if I can't see it in Revit. Sad

Any help would be HUGELY appreciated.

Could this be a graphics card issue?  I have a brand new computer, with a killer graphics card in it.

Here's a couple of screen shots:

  • one with Linked CAD file "invisible"
  • one with Linked CAD file SELECTED & thus, "visible"

Any clues?

If you don't have any model elements like walls hiding the CAD import, it should be visible.

As you suggested, I bet it is a memory / graphics card issue.  Close out and restart Revit with just this window open.

BTW - If this is a huge drawing, you should wblock out just this portion.  ....  And BTW - Are you looking at this from a sheet placed view?  That is a problem with CAD imports on a sheet.  Look at it in the native view.

Well, I was hoping to upload a Revit Model and the AutoCAD detail, but for the life of me, I can't get the revit model below the 2mb file size limit.  I've deleted nearly the entire model, purged it, and even used Ideat Explorer to find hidden things to delete.  I'm going crazy!

Anyway, the CAD file is a WBLOCKED view of only the needed section, and its in model space.

Graphics Card is Nvidia Quadro 2000.  Revit Options says that the driver I'm using is NEWER than the certified driver.  I tried turning off graphics acceleration but it didn't help. (see attached)

When you imported this CAD, you should have checked the box "current view only"  That would have made this import 2D and only in this view.

I had this same problem and spoke with my Revit Structure teacher about it.  He was puzzled to but found this workaround.  Set your far clip offset to 25' or more.  It worked for me.  Hope this helps.

I had the same problem as well.  But setting the far clip option didn't work for me.  What did work was this: to select the .dwg (mine was a link and not an import) and then in the "properties" dialogue I changed the draw layer from "background" to "foreground".

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem, happens in different locations. Changing draw layer doesn't seem to make a difference.

It has to do with the Far Clipping.  Play with the different options for that view and it will show up with one of them.

My solution-

Select everything in current view by pressing ctrl+A

Filter results and select .dwg file

Under properties/other turn Draw Layer to Foreground

If you can select it, it's there. I think it's probably set to "background" instead of "foreground" and hidden behind another object. Once the dwg is selected, you can change this "Draw Layer" parameter in de options bar (the green bar between the ribon and your workspace) or at the properties of the dwg.

In case someone is looking at this old thread for answers:  What worked for me was to go to the default 3d view.  I could see the CAD file there. I got the Selection ID of the CAD link ("Manage" tab, "Inquiry" area on ribbon, "IDs of Selection" button).  Once I had the selection ID I went to the plan view where I wanted the CAD file to be visible, selected the CAD link using the selection ID ("Manage" tab, "Inquiry", "Select by ID").  Once selected then I right-clicked "Overide Graphics in View".  I saw that the visibility checkbox was filled, not checked.  I checked the box and the CAD file appeared in the view.  This all assumes the necessary worksets are active in the view.
