I'm not sure if there is already a thread out there for this so sorry if one exists (I tried looking...) I am new to modeling custom objects in Revit since everything I'm reading suggests not bringing in objects from Sketchup (and I've had problems in the past from doing this) and I have finally created my first model which is a table and I converted it into a display case since I can't seem to find a model similar to what I need.

Heres the problem, with both familys when I try to add a material to just one object (the table top for example) it changes the legs to that material as well and same for my display case. How do I tell Revit to distinguish from the different elements and make them sepereate. Right now my entire display case is either glass or metal which for obvious reasons just doesnt work.  I tried selecthing one part at a time and it still assigns all the parts the same materials. I also tried adding material parameters to distinguish between them but all that does is change the name, and still applys the same matieral to the whole model. With my table I was able to select the top and make it wood, but once I attempted to add something to the legs it changed the whole model. Right now I have the wood top and legs with nothing assigned to them.

Check your family, you have the same material name to the top and the legs, edit your family, select the legs and create a new material parameter, then do the same to the top.
