...then I have to zoom in. Initially, the view is tiny (about 1/50th of the screen space). Every time I change views, I have to zoom in.
Something is wrong somewhere in my settings, but I can't figure it out.

Not your settings. There may be something very small out in space that is causing this. Wildow the whole view then remove the building from your selection se and see what is left.

That was it! There were two tiny pieces of insulation that were hardly visible off to one side.
