Is it possible to create a new family by solid poly modeling using a program outside of Revit. IE poly modeling in Rhino or Autocad, then importing that model in and using it as a foundation for a new family?
Is there a tutorial for doing this somewhere?

yes you can inport almost anything you want into revit, the problem is that the family won't be parametric.
there should be a tutorial on how to grow your family collection using imports, there is a link up called (funny enough) Tutorials have fun

Hmmm.. it seems wierd to me that they didn't design the program to allow polygon models to be easily made parametric. You just need constraints on the control points, like how 3D studio Max handles character rigging, this would allow you to model in a superior modeling program, and then have beautiful families.

Parametric smarts are only available to revit created families with the exception of imported site components that can be scaled in revit in a project.
