Hi there.
I am currently using Revit 2012 on a 5 or so year-old computer running with XP. It has, in the past, supported well with Revit 2009 with the addition of better graphics cards and higher RAM.
I have been using 2012 for approx 3 months now and I have had no issues with it. However, recently I've had "lagging" issues with it when working on a central file.
(I will try to explain as best as I can)
At the moment, there is only 2 of us in the business so therefore no more than 2 people will be accessing the one central file at any time. Both users are using Revit 2012. One user however, is using a new laptop where the other is using a PC.
Laptop: 8GB RAM, Windows 7
PC: 1GB RAM (updated over years), Windows XP
Only recently have we both been accessing the one central file at the same time.
When this occurred, I was having issues with the speed of my revit file while the other user had no problems.
For an example:
1) I would try to move a 3D wall while under the correct workset and (see attached) this message would come up.
2) I would try to add 2D Detail lines or move/copy them and (see attached) this message would come up.
Previously, we've only had this message come up when one person is saving to central and the other person tries to save at the same time.
This message is coming up frequently and can stay on the screen for up to approx. 2 minutes. This, as you could imagine, is very annoying and stops productivity.
If anyone could let me know why this might be happening, how to resolve it, or if you've had the same problem, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

Instead of both of you using the same Central File it would probably be better for you to create a local file for yourself. It may speed things up.

Are you both on architecture or is someone on MEP?

Sorry, I should have clarified. We are both working on our own local files and then saving to central.
And we're both using Revit Architecture 2012.

Are either of you saving from tiled views? Saving from any view requires that the view or views if tiled, be written to the file. Tiled views, especially perspectives, that are heavily detailed take time. We ask for all users to save from a simple legend view (Project Description) that is pre-set in our template. This results in the smallest file.
There were some posts here awhile back about central file sync issues in 2012. One of the users had a different operating system. I have not been able to find the post but I believe there are some operating/network settings that need to be adjusted. Hopefully someone else can remember what those were.

Thanks so much! I just found a similar post with the exact problem we're having.
IE XP users unable to access the central while Windows 7 users are still able to access it.
Here's the link if anybody else is interested:

Thanks again.

It seems that there is a known issue with smb network changes between xp and windows 7 OS.

Unfortunately this does not solve my problem. We are receiving the user access message, but all computers are on Windows 7.

We're also having this problem at our office. 3-4 users on a project are being significantly slowed down by this. So there's no solution yet? At what point does Autodesk have some level of responsibility here?

I'm trying to follow the solution outlined here:
http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/Revit/enu/2012/Help/Revit_Administration_Guide/0002-Revit_Se2/0008-Revit_Se8/0010-Managing10/Troubleshooting_Model-Level_Locks_in_Revit_Server
But I'm stuck at step 1. Where are these “Data_Users.lock” and “Permissions_Users.lock” files it mentions? There are no such files in our [project]\Revit folder on our network. The only things in that folder are our Central file, the Architectural link, and various backup folders. Am I missing something basic?

Are you using Revit Server? If not, than this doesn't apply.

Just to expand on what I stated about the Windows 7 changeover, both our office computers are now running on Windows 7 Professional.
Not sure if it makes a difference but I did read somewhere that a conflict will occur when (for example) one computer is running on Windows 7 Home Premium and the other is running on Windows 7 Professional.
Maybe check what versions of operating systems your computers are running on, this may fix your issue?

The two workstations have different usernames set up in the General Tab of Revit Options. The Username for Windows is different for each workstation as well, and the same goes for the Mac side. I've had experience using Revit with Central/Local files before without any issues, however that was on a PC and now we are on Macs using Parallels which I am not familiar with.
Any other ideas?
