I'm working in Revit MEP 2011 and am trying to insert a cooktop RFA family into the plan. Under the architect tab, I see window, door, etc. but no component. I have the cooktop as a component but not a detail component. Am I trying to do the impossible?

You see window - door - yes, obviously not those - you also see component? That is what you obviously have. Detail components are under the annotate tab because they are 2D - view specific.

I believe he said that he does NOT see component. I would suggest loading the family into your project, go down to the families tab in the project browser and just drag it in from there. I don't work with MEP so I am not sure why you wouldn't have a component button on the ribbon.
