To create a timber frame family, I need to precisely notch the timbers. To control the dimensions with parameters, length, width, depth, there is no problem. And then flexing the dimensions works just fine.
Now when I want to make notches in the extrude profile and control the sketchwith parameters, I get a "constraints are not satisfied" message on attempting to flexthe parameters. In this case setting 'a = 27' in the parameters properties dialog box.And the only option offered is to remove the constraints. What should I be doing?

OK I understand that in order to control sketching through parameters
you have to construct your drawings with reference planes.
It worked for the first cut, but the method gets stuck on the second cut.
See new attachments.
Also I would like to know how to anchor the starting plane, and have
the secondary planes move in relation to that one. Being able to set
sketch lines and reference lines to a thinner gauge would be nice too.

Hi cketros
Any way you could pack your example in RAC2011 readable format,
or spell out the gist of the strategy you are suggesting?
Sorry. Don't have access to RAC2012 where I am.

OK I got it thank you.
The key to the problem is to use reference planes and lines unsparingly,
and lock everything down like crazy. It's now working fine.
Thank you very much for taking the trouble.

Absolutely. With very few exceptions, you don't want to flex any model elements (extrusions, etc.) directly. Build a skeleton out of ref planes/lines, and make that parametric. Then tie your model elements to that.
